Welcome to ACCELERATE NORTHFIELD. We hope we can led a hand — and some reading and math tutors — to assist you in the task of growing LEARNING SUPERHEROES!
Since ACCELERATE was established in 2011, its mission has been to provide elementary school students an extra academic. That has been accomplished by recruiting reading and math volunteer tutors. We seek out community members — adult residents, parents and college students, among that group — who want to encourage our students to become “LEARNING SUPERHEROES.”
The emphasis of ACCELERATE‘s efforts early on was to close Northfield’s achievement gap. While that remains at the heart of was ACCELERATE does, its reach has broadened to give an academic hand to all students.

COLLEGE STUDENTS: A large portion of our volunteer force consists of Carleton and St. Olaf students in the Northfield Reads and Counts program. They will typically begin registering for tutor positions in mid-September.
SENIORS AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS: Another group is made up of seniors and retirees recruited through a joint effort of Accelerate Northfield and Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota. The remaining Accelerate Northfield tutors are parents and family of students, as well as other college students and community members with a desire to help our students reach new levels of academic success.
One key point to consider:
ADULTS DO NOT NEED TO HAVE CHILDREN AS STUDENTS IN THE NORTHFIELD SCHOOL DISTRICT TO VOLUNTEER IN NORTHFIELD SCHOOLS!
Community volunteers typically begin searching for opportunities at reading and math tutors in early September. College volunteers start seeking spots about midway through the month.
That said, teachers are encouraged to add volunteer opportunities throughout the school year. The big push to populate the matching site is in late August and early September.
To request volunteers, teacher log onto ACCELERATE’S MATCHING WEBSITE (https://www.acceleratenorthfield.org/matching/login.php). CLICK HERE to go directly to that site.
Teachers will receive login information from ACCELERATE’s coordinator during workshop week in late August. CLICK HERE to request a duplicate of that information.
Although teachers might not know exactly what their tutoring needs will be early in the school year, most have a general idea of when and how a volunteer tutor can serve reading and math students. So, it is advisable to make requests now and make changes later.
