ACCELERATE Overview: Who We Are, What We Do

Welcome to ACCELERATE NORTHFIELD, and welcome to the 2019-20 school year in the NORTHFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS!

We enter the year with high hopes for success for ALL students, regardless of color, ethnicity, economic status, belief system or gender.

Our community – full-time and part-time residents, college students and business professionals, among that group – has been an active partner in helping our district and our students to reach lofty achievements for many years.

You can join that partnership, too, by signing up as a volunteer math or reading tutor with ACCELERATE NORTHFIELD.

WHO WE ARE

ACCELERATE NORTHFIELD is a collaboration among parents, community members and organizations dedicated to improving the academic performance of local students. In other words, we help transform students into LEARNING SUPERHEROES!

The group was ORIGINALLY ESTABLISHED IN 2011 to assist Northfield schools in reducing Northfield’s achievement gap. (The achievement gap is the differences in academic performance between groups of students. CLICK HERE to read more about the achievement gap in Minnesota.)

In the years since first assisting students, ACCELERATE‘s reach has grown. Its volunteer tutors work with a variety of students in reading and math primarily in NORTHFIELD SCHOOL DISTRICT‘s three elementary schools:

BRIDGEWATER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

GREENVALE PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

SIBLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Accelerate tutors also have the option to serve at NORTHFIELD MIDDLE SCHOOL and ARCADIA CHARTER SCHOOL.

WHAT WE DO

ACCELERATE NORTHFIELD’s job is to recruit community members to become math or reading tutors. No experience is necessary, except for a passion to help transform Northfield elementary students into LEARNING SUPERHEROES!

Our tutors meet with students on an individual basis or in small groups. While most of our volunteers are students at St. Olaf and Carleton colleges, we are grateful to have a large representation of Northfield adults among our ranks.

The process of becoming a tutor is simple: complete a mandatory background check administered through the school district and be connected to at least one tutoring opportunity via Accelerate Northfield’s database.

Tutors are asked to help out at least one hour a week. That said, we work to accommodate your schedule.

ACCELERATE NORTHFIELD looks forward to you joining our ranks of volunteer tutors. We are confident that you can help our students aim high in their academics and become LEARNING SUPERHEROES!
