Meet Our New Co-Coordinator!

Welcome to Accelerate Northfield’s November & December, 2014 newsletter!

** A Note from Accelerate Northfield

————————————————————
Hello Tutors,

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving weekend! As we get ready for the long winter break, I would like to introduce you all, virtually at least, to Accelerate Northfield’s newest staff member: Michael Garlitz.

Michael joined the Accelerate Northfield team earlier this fall as a Co-Coordinator. While Michael is new to Accelerate Northfield, he is not new to Northfield schools. Michael and his wife, Dr. Shannon Garlitz, have lived in Northfield for 16 years, and all of their children (Christopher, Emily, and Elise) currently attend Northfield schools.

Michael started getting involved in the schools by volunteering in his children’s classroom. He currently is in his second year as a Minnesota Math Corps tutor at Sibley Elementary School. As a math tutor, Michael works with more than two dozen students — mostly fourth- and fifth-graders — to improve their fact fluency and overall math skills.

Since he joined Accelerate in late August, Michael has worked to improve Accelerate’s visibility in the community. In fact, you may have recently heard him on-air with Jeff Johnson on KYMN Radio’s morning show.

You will be hearing more from Michael later on in the year, and we are very excited to have him join the Accelerate Northfield team!

I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday season.

Best,
Amy

** Tutoring Tips
————————————————————
Managing a group of students can be challenging, so here are a few tips from LEARNS and the Corporation for National Service.

1) Make sure your group members can attend consistently, and that they can stay to work with you the whole time. Consistency will help students feel more comfortable sharing and learning with the group.

2) Make sure your physical space is conducive to learning. Choose an area with limited noise and distractions. Have students sit in a circle; this will help focus their attention on the group and foster discussion.

3) Help students be more engaged by giving thoughtful consideration to each students’ contribution and by acknowledging different strategies students use to learn. This will make each student feel like they have something meaningful to contribute to the group and keep them more engaged in your activity.
