Fall News from Accelerate Northfield

Welcome to Accelerate Northfield’s October, 2014 newsletter!

** A Note from Accelerate Northfield**
————————————————————
Hello Tutors,

I hope you all are having a wonderful fall and have had a great first month or so of tutoring! Accelerate Northfield is off to a great start, too. In fact, it’s the best first two months of the school year we’ve had! Our volunteer tutors have already contributed over 600 volunteer hours, and have filled almost 59 percent of teacher requests for help.

Despite this exciting beginning, we still have a significant number of teachers and students who need our help. There are currently 150 unfilled teacher requests for tutors. To ensure we reach all those students and teachers, and provide them the support they need, Accelerate Northfield needs you to spread the word around about our program and the need for volunteers in our elementary schools.

Many of our tutors heard about our program from a friend or acquaintance who was involved. So, please take a minute this month to tell a friend about Accelerate Northfield and how they could help close the achievement gap in our schools.

Thank you, and I wish you all a safe and happy Halloween!

Best,
Amy

** Tutoring Tips
————————————————————
Having trouble getting your student to focus and pay attention during your tutoring sessions? Here are a few strategies that could help them concentrate.
1) Have your student take a “stretch” break. Let them stand up, move around and stretch for a minute or two. Then, have them sit back down to work.

2) Clarify the problem. If your students are not focused on the task at hand, ask them why. If there is a problem, ask them if they want to talk about it. Though there might not be an issue your students want to discuss, they may be more productive if you spend a little extra time chatting before getting started.

3) Be clear about your role and your tasks for the day including what you can and cannot do with students during your tutoring session. I.e. “We have to work on reading aloud today, but you can choose which story we read.” This will help set boundaries, and may make students feel more comfortable and focused.
