A Note from Accelerate Northfield

Hello Tutors,   We have a jam-packed newsletter for you this month, so I’ll jump right in.  Recent data collected by the schools shows that our tutors have had a significant impact on students’ academic growth.

5th grade students receiving interventions from Accelerate tutors improved test scores from fall to winter by 23% more compared to their peers. Our tutors are helping students close the gap and reach grade-level reading and math skills.  Congratulations tutors!!

Despite this extremely welcome news, we do still have a long way to reach our goal of closing the achievement gap.  We are currently filling 56% of teacher requests for tutors.  While this is a great achievement given the high number of teacher requests we have this year, we would love to bring that number up!

If you find an extra hour in your schedule, please consider Response to Intervention tutoring.  Sibley Elementary in particular is looking for more Response to Intervention tutors.  It does make a significant difference in a student’s academic performance.

And one final thing before I go, Accelerate is looking for tutors to read during an event at the Public Library in March.  On Saturday morning, March 15th, Accelerate Northfield will be hosting a Story Time at the Northfield Public Library, which will highlight Accelerate tutors.  We are looking for more tutors who are interested in reading during this event.  It will take no more than an hour of your time.  If you are interested, please contact Amy Decker at: amy@acceleratenorthfield.org for more details.

Best Wishes,

Amy Decker

Current Events

As you may have heard, there has been a lot of media talk recently about the nation’s progress towards closing the achievement gap.  There was a particularly good keynote address, given by Kati Haycock, the president of The Education Trust, that aired on Minnesota Public Radio last week.  She points out, that while significant progress towards closing the gap has been made at the elementary level, this progress disappears in later years.  The speech is well worth a listen, and here’s the link.
